About Zhang Huan - 关于张洹

 

Zhang Huan is born in 1965 in China, and is one of the most influential Chinese contemporary artists, with a significant international career. His works are both existential investi­ga­tions and social commentary. They revolve around the vulnerability and identity of human beings, transcendence and spirituality. He lives and works today in Shanghai after living in New York in 1998-2005.

Zhang Huan embarked on his artistic work at the beginning of the 1990s when, using his body as his medium, he created performances that were based on physical and men­tal endurance. His practice in recent years has included photography, installation, sculpture and painting, and his works revolve around themes like memory and spiri­tuality with the practice of Buddhism as a frame of reference.

 

张洹1965年生于中国,是最具影响力的中国当代艺术家之一,备受国际瞩目。作品关注人类、超越以及灵魂的脆弱和身份,兼具对存在的探索和社会的批判。张洹于1998-2005年间定居纽约,现生活工作于上海。

张洹在上世纪90年代初开始艺术创作,以身体为媒介的行为艺术基于身体和心理的承受力。张洹近年的创作涵盖摄影、装置、雕塑和绘画,以佛教作为参考框架探讨记忆和灵魂的主题。
