About Anselm Kiefer

Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) is a German post-war painter and sculptor, who studied with Joseph Beuys and Peter Dreher during the 1970s. Through the use of heavy materials such as lead, clay, shellac, straw, dried flowers, ash and broken glass, his works refer to subjects drawn from Germany and its culture: German history, myths, literature, music, philosophy and religion, as well as questions of postwar heritage.
