LUISE AND JENS FAURSCHOU OPEN NEW ART INSTITUTION
FOR 25 YEARS WE HAVE SUCCESSFULLY RUN A GALLERY, AND IN THE COURSE OF THESE YEARS WE HAVE DETERMINEDLY COLLECTED INTERNATIONAL ART OF THE VERY HIGHEST STANDARD.
NOW WE WANT TO REALIZE A DREAM WE HAVE HAD FOR MANY YEARS OF DEVOTING ALL OUR TIME, COMPETENCE AND NETWORKS TO BUILDING UP AND DEVELOPING THIS ‘LIVING’ COLLECTION.
THE COLLECTION WILL BE ‘LIVING’ IN THE SENSE THAT MAJOR WORKS BY IMPORTANT ARTISTS WILL STILL BE ACQUIRED, AND WORKS CAN ALSO BE SOLD OFF AGAIN TO MAKE CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE.
WE HAVE FURTHER DECIDED TO MAKE THE COLLECTION ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
WITH AN EXHIBITION SPACE ALREADY SMOOTHLY FUNCTIONING IN BEIJING, WE ARE NOW WORKING TO FIND A NEW, SIMILARLY SUITABLE EXHIBITION SPACE IN COPENHAGEN.
IN ORDER TO CONCENTRATE ON DEVELOPING AND SHOWING OUR COLLECTION, WE ARE PHASING OUT OUR GALLERY OPERATIONS AND ESTABLISHING THE FAURSCHOU FOUNDATION.
THE FAURSCHOU FOUNDATION
OUR DREAM IS TO CREATE SERIOUS, PROFESSIONALLY RUN EXHIBITION SPACES FOR INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART IN COPENHAGEN AND BEIJING BASED ON THIS COLLECTION – WITH INSPIRATION FROM INSTITUTIONS LIKE MAGASIN 3 (STOCKHOLM), THE DESTE FOUNDATION (ATHENS) AND THE ULLENS CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (BEIJING).
THE EXHIBITION SPACES IN COPENHAGEN AND BEIJING WILL BE BASED ON PRIVATE FUNDING, BUT WILL BE ORIENTED TOWARDS – AND OPEN TO – THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
THE EXHIBITIONS WE WILL BE MOUNTING IN THE FUTURE WILL TAKE THEIR POINT OF DEPARTURE IN THE COLLECTION, AND WE WILL BE CREATING NEW EXHIBITIONS IN COLLABORATION WITH SOME OF THE BEST CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, CURATORS, MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN THE WORLD.
THE COLLECTION WILL THUS BE SHOWN REGULARLY, BOTH IN SOLO EXHIBITIONS OF WORKS BY THE ARTISTS’ REPRESENTED IN THE COLLECTION AND IN THEMATIC EXHIBITIONS OF WORKS BY SEVERAL ARTISTS.
OUR NEW EXHIBITION INSTITUTION WILL GIVE HIGH PRIORITY TO THE WORK WITH PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION FOR AN INCREASINGLY INTERESTED ART PUBLIC.
AN ART WORLD IN TRANSITION
IN RECENT YEARS WE HAVE SEEN STRIKING CHANGES IN THE GLOBAL ART MARKET. THE ART MARKET USED TO BE LOCALLY ROOTED – OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS THE ART MARKET HAS BECOME GLOBALIZED IN EARNEST, NEW MARKETS HAVE EMERGED IN LATIN AMERICA, ASIA, THE MIDDLE EAST AND OTHER PARTS OF THE GLOBE; AND GALLERISTS FROM THESE FORMER PERI¬PHERIES ARE NOW AS INEVITABLE VISITORS TO THE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIRS AS GALLERISTS FROM THE CLASSIC CENTRES LIKE NEW YORK, PARIS AND LONDON.
AT PRESENT A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IS TAKING PLACE IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE GALLERY SECTOR, AS SOME OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST GALLERIES SUCH AS PACE, GAGOSIAN, HAUSER UND WIRTH ETC. OPEN MORE BRANCHES IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD. IN THIS SENSE AN ARTIST NO LONGER, AS BEFORE, HAS AN AMERICAN GALLERIST, A EUROPEAN GALLERIST AND A SCANDINAVIAN GALLERIST. THE NEW MEGA-GALLERIES CAN ABSORB THE WHOLE OUTPUT OF AN ARTIST.
IN ANOTHER TREND, THE BEST-ESTABLISHED ARTISTS ARE MORE FREQUENTLY ENGAGING A PERSONAL ASSISTANT AND CURATOR TO DEAL WITH THE WORK THAT WAS ONCE THE GALLERIST’S, WHILE WE HAVE SEEN AN ARTIST LIKE DAMIEN HIRST GO DIRECTLY TO THE SALESROOM WITH HIS BRAND NEW WORKS.
WE HAVE SOUNDED OUT THIS DEVELOPMENT AND HAVE DECIDED TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIREC¬TION – A DIRECTION WHERE THE ESSENTIAL THING FOR US IS TO FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL WORK, THE “QUALITY OF THE WORK” RATHER THAN THE QUANTITY.
IN FUTURE WE WILL FOCUS ON PURCHASES RATHER THAN SALES, AND WILL HELP TO CREATE SETTINGS WHERE IMPORTANT ART CAN BE CREATED AND SHOWN TO A WIDE PUBLIC.
BEIJING AND COPENHAGEN
THE DECISION TO CREATE A COLLECTION-BASED EXHIBITION SPACE IS INSPIRED BY THE WAY WE HAVE IN FACT SUCCESSFULLY RUN OUR EXHIBITION SPACE IN BEIJING OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.
IN 2007 WE OPENED A BEAUTIFUL, 1000 M2 EXHIBITION SPACE IN THE 798 ART DISTRICT, BEIJING’S FOREMOST GALLERY NEIGHBOURHOOD. GIVEN THE INCREASING GLOBAL INFLUENCE OF CHINA, BEIJING IS STILL A RELEVANT AND EXCITING PLACE TO BE.
IN COPENHAGEN WE ARE AT PRESENT NEGOTIATING ABOUT SEVERAL EQUALLY ATTRACTIVE PREMISES.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING A BASE OF OPERATIONS IN COPENHAGEN. CONSIDERING THE SIZE OF THE CITY, FEW OTHER PLACES ARE AS DYNAMIC AND HAVE SUCH HIGH QUALITY AND SO WIDE A RANGE OF OPTIONS IN ART, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN.
IT IS OUR JUDGEMENT THAT THE ART SCENE IN COPENHAGEN IS FULLY A MATCH FOR THE BEST INTERNATIONALLY.
FOR MANY YEARS IT HAS BEEN OUR DREAM TO FOCUS ON THE COLLECTION AND ITS DEVELOP¬MENT, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SHOWING IT. WITH A STARTING POINT IN THE RESULTS AND THE COLLECTION WE HAVE CREATED OVER THE YEARS, IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO FULFIL THIS DREAM.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO OFFERING MANY EXCITING EXHIBITIONS IN THE YEARS TO COME!!
