Christian Lemmerz’ new exhibition at Galleri Faurschou is entitled ”God”. This refers to the intensified role the question of religion has played globally in these past years.
The predominant work in this exhibition is a large model depicting the city of Copenhagen bombed beyond recognition - thoroughly executed in white foam. The model resembles a grotesque anti-architectural model. The white colour, usually associated with purity and in architectural models, new visionary projects for the future, is in Lemmerz’ version reverted to a vision of our fears and powerless awaiting the possibility of a terror attack on Copenhagen.
Incorporating significant events from the media constructed reality into his art is evident to Christian Lemmerz. These events play a significant role in shaping our culture, as this is the imagery upon which we construct our knowledge and reality.
In a conscious selection of form and materials, Christian Lemmerz lifts current events from the narrow context of the news stream towards eternity. It may be an aesthetic elevation performed in white marble or gold leaf bronze or as here where the model of Copenhagen, executed in white foam, could be an image of any bombed city from the past and in the future. The model could be of Dresden 1945. Christian Lemmerz’ use of ‘kitsch’ as an ironic artistic effect is visible in the sculpture ‘The Reconstruction of the Twin Towers on an Iceberg’ and in a series of new large format prints applying the artistic effects of advertising.
To Christian Lemmerz art is considered a space for reflection. In his opinion, art is culture’s last free public space, not controlled by moral or power political interests.
The opening of the exhibition is Thursday the 4th of May, 5-7 pm.
