About Zhang Huan
Zhang Huan is born in 1965 in China, and is one of the most influential Chinese contemporary artists, with a significant international career. His works are both existential investigations and social commentary. They revolve around the vulnerability and identity of human beings, transcendence and spirituality. He lives and works today in Shanghai after living in New York in 1998-2005.
Zhang Huan embarked on his artistic work at the beginning of the 1990s when, using his body as his medium, he created performances that were based on physical and mental endurance. His practice in recent years has included photography, installation, sculpture and painting, and his works revolve around themes like memory and spirituality with the practice of Buddhism as a frame of reference.
